THE FAMOUS DIARIES

Using Diaries in ESL classrooms

Diaries have provided historians and people an insight into the past. They have been used by many famous individuals to document what is happening to them throughout history as well as what was happening to their country at the time as well. Numerous diaries have been published and there are several that have hit a historical status and have remained as best sellers on literary lists throughout the world.

One of the most famous diaries is that of Anne Frank. Anne Frank depicted her life in hiding during World War II through her personal diary "Kitty." The diary described life with her family and four friends in Amsterdam during German occupation. As she and her family were Jewish, they were forced to hide in a hidden apartment.

The diary for which she is famous was given to her on her thirteenth birthday. The diary chronicles the life of her and her family from June 12, 1942 to August 1, 1944. The book was originally published by her father, Otto Frank, who returned to Amsterdam and found the book. The original title was The Backhouse: Diary Notes from 12 June 1942-1 August 1944. The book would later be published as The Diary of a Young Girl. The book has been translated from Dutch into several languages and has also been made into films, television movies, theatrical productions and an opera. Anne Frank accurately described every detail of what it was like to live under Nazi occupation in hiding.

I am writing diary during my college period and personally feel that diary is can be our friend when no one cares or around us. life is ten percent what happens to us and ninety percent how we react to it.so, when i was in Sabah for a camping for 12 days(1993) my wife took all the diaries and starts to read and the moment i back from Sabah on 23rd November 1993,she was so angry that i have hide many things.

Its also make some kind of experiences will motivate students to tell their bad experiences and tragedies.

Literature for personal response

Using biography as a classroom teaching
Humanity in Struggle for peace

Hai, pn dzeelfa, again i start to blog after a month gap coz busy with assignment, presentations, micro teaching and production. My mind relax now compare to a week ago.Its quite hard and challenging to involve seriously in off campus studies.I have started my studies on 2007 and its going to end very fast. I was so happy to complete my studies and the other hand i miss u all, UPM, notes, photocopy, peers and a lot of things yah.....
My topic of discussion today is about Mahatma Gandhi The Man Of Millenium. Before Gandhi came on the political scene, the world knew only two instruments of change, the bullet and the ballot. Gandhi brought a new methodology of struggle in which there was a human touch . Once he said: "In a violent war, the General of the army is at the back in a closed tank well guarded. But in my non-violent battle one who leads the struggle is at the head of the people to face the first bullet if need be. And even if the leader is killed, probably his death could rouse and awaken the people, through his death." Gandhi's human touch starts from patriotic urge. Suffering of man in search of freedom is more explosive than the bullets that seek to suppress freedom, was Gandhi's faith. Reders may have heard about Gandhi's Dandi March for the Salt Satyagraha, which was one of the most important epics of our struggle for freedom. A few Kilometers from Dandi, there is a small village called Karadi. In that Karadi village there was one disciple of Gandhi, called Pancha Kaka Patel. He participated in no-tax campaign of Gandhi. He participated in Dandi Salt Satyagraha. The British Government confiscated his house. His agricultural land and other property was also confiscated. While he was being taken to jail handcuffed, the police said: "See, not a single inch of land remains in your possession. Your house too has been confiscated." Pancha Kaka Patel told the police : "You can rest assured, I will never ask for the the return of my property, till India becomes free." In 1937, Congress Government was formed in the then Bombay Presidency. In Bombay Presidency, Shri B. G. Kher became the Chief Minister and he sent a message to Gandhi's disciple Pancha Kaka Patel that: "We are prepared to give back your house and land confiscated during the British rule." He said: "No this is not the freedom of Gandhi's dream and I have taken a pledge that till India becomes completely independent, I will not take back my property. Keep it with you." In 1947, on 15th August, India became free. This disciple of Gandhi, Pancha Kaka, was told: "Now the country has become free and so take back your property." He contacted Gandhi. He said: "Gandhiji, do you feel that freedom of your dream has come?" Gandhi said: "Unfortunately, I must say no." And then Pancha Kaka told the government: "I cannot accept back my property." Then some cynics, commented : "Oh! Pancha Kaka Patel refuses to accept the confiscated property. But when he dies his wife and his children will claim that property." And after this comment, Pancha Kaka Patel came with a statement: "I anticipated this possibility and therefore to avoid any embarrassment to me, I did not get married at all and I have no children." That was what he said. Such was the human material that Gandhi's human touch had created.

Non-violence of Brave

Again I will give another illustration in which there was an intense human touch. It was the Satyagraha movement on the North-West frontier when Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, called as the Frontier Gandhi, was leading it. On the previous night of Satyagraha, he war arrested. Next day, one thousand Pathans stood to offer Satyagraha. Since Pathans belonging to the 'militant race' were to offer Satyagraha, the British did not send the Police to control the situation arising out of Satyagraha. They sent the Garhwal regiment of the Army. And when that regiment reached the spot of Satyagraha, the Captain of the regiment, an Englishman, gave orders to the Pathans to disperse within 10 minutes. No Pathan dispersed. Again he said: "I give you 15 minutes more." They did not disperse. And then he said: "Within 5 minutes I will open fire." The Pathans bared their chests and said: "Captain, we are prepared to be fired upon. Open fire. Fire as many bullets as you want. Let us see whether our chest with the urge for freedom is powerful or your bullets." After 10 minutes, the Captain ordered: "Fire" However, men from the Garhwal regiment did not fire bullets on Satyagrahis. They threw down their rifles. Captain said: "You will be court-martialled. You may be hanged. You might be sentenced to life imprisonment." They told the Captain: "Whether you kill us or imprison us, we have seen the sublime courage of these Pathans. Those who gave us military training, taught us how to fire at those who had guns and rifles in their hands. They have not taught us to fire at unarmed patriots."

So,stories of gandiji can be used to arouse humanity, braveness and unity. activities such as role play, script writing skills and giving talk on your favorite leaders can be arrange as a classroom activities.

Women Perform Better Than Men

Hai, Dr. I have finished my play review and its about 'The Necklace' Form 4/5 text. Position paper i have select 'Story Of An Hour',whereby all in a sketch. And I have contacted most of my friends and they are concerning on preparing for mid year examination. The story of an hour portray about women freedom. The topic which is related to my topic today about women.

I think the topic women perform better than men attracts everyone. We still talking about gender bias in this 21st century. Some say men supported the idea of women in high places. Tan Sri Dr Zeti our Bank Negara Governor for instance, a iron lady. Most of the civil service were filled by women. They have a bright chance to have higher potential position in future.Furthermore, paper qualifications in which women seem to be the best.More and more continuing further studies to qualifying them as future leaders.

We know that these days there are more women teachers than men.Which I feel not healthy and there are very few male teachers to train the football teams.

So,finally my own opinion is to win life race both parties have to be together and maintain unity to perform the best.

Daffodils

Title and Theme of the Poem 'Daffodils'

Poem...poem... last semester we have focused about poem a lot with Dr.Vethamani. He is quite strict but such lovely person yah... The title, 'Daffodils' is a simple word that reminds us about the arrival of the spring season, when the field and low land is full of daffodils. We are in Malaysia couldn't feel the experiences of four kinds of weather. Daffodils are yellow flowers, having an amazing shape and beautiful fragrance. A bunch of daffodils symbolize the joys and happiness of life.

The theme of the poem 'Daffodils' is a collection of human emotions inspired by nature that we may have neglected due to our busy lives. The daffodils have gone through rebirth, a new beginning for human beings, blessed with the grace of nature. The arrival of daffodils in the month of March is welcome and an enjoyable time to appreciate them!

The tone of poem attracts me very much. But when I saw the mountain with the lake where you can find the "Daffodil" are wonderful and I would like to visit and feel the situation one day.

A smile is a sign of love

A smile is a sign of care
A smile tells how much to others
You are important and also dear

A smile is a sign of cheer
A smile is a sign of trust
A smile shows how you can
Be happy even in hard crust

A smile is a sign of joy
A smile is a sign of hope
A smile teaches you how you can
Remove the clouds of mope

For nothing but only a smile
Takes away your pain and trial
And pick your trouble's pile
And let you smile, smile and smile.

Aesops's Fables

Aesop's fables

Introduction

Fables are an important part of literary traditions of all nation. Fables often teach moral values either in an implicit or explicit manner.

Aesop's Fables online collection, can be found in www.aesopfables.com. Included with Real Audio narrations, Classic Images, Random Images and Random Fables. Every day hundreds of kids from all over the world stop by to read, learn and enhance their living experience. This website is widely read by all cultures from all over the world.

Example of Aesop fables

Once upon a time there was a fable about a race between a turtle and a rabbit. The rabbit was so much faster than the turtle. During the race, the rabbit had a tremendous lead and decided to take a nap before finishing the race. When the rabbit woke up, the turtle had won the race. The rabbit was embarrassed. The rabbit knew that the rabbit was so much faster than the turtle. The rabbit challenged the turtle again to another race. In the next race, the rabbit won, easily. The rabbit was by far physically faster than the turtle. Because the rabbit became overconfident, the rabbit did not use his physical advantage. The rabbit lost the first race. Even though the turtle lost the second race, the turtle was happy when he finished the race.
Lesson: In life there are those that have a greater advantage than others. The greater advantage might allow them to win a race. But just like the turtle, happiness is determined by achieving one's own individual goal.

The Son Of The Turtle - Spirit

Folktales

Chinese Folktales And Myths

The Chinese have told each other stories for many different reasons - to teach things to their children, to make each other laugh, to record their feelings and observations and to explain how things got to be the way they are. Thus, common themes in Chinese folktales and myths revolve around filial piety in "Madam White Snake", triumph of good over evil in "Journey to the West", supremacy of wisdom over sheer physical strength in "the Romance of the three kingdoms", "Hua Mulan", cleverness and resourcefulness in "Wu Song kills a tiger", everlasting love in "Liang Shanbo and Zhu YingTai", "A Dream Of Red Mansions", "The Cowherd and the Girl Weaver", supernatural in "The Goddess Of Mercy", "God Of Longevity", "Zhong Kui", "Nuwa Repairs the Heaven", "Pangu Creates the Universe". Through these stories, Chinese values, traditions and customs are passed from one generation to the next.Follow the series "The Son Of The Turtle" showing an everlasting love.

The story of "The Son Of The Turtle-Spirit" have given us thoughts about supernatural powers. The childs mother shows brave, selfawareness characters dealing with happen around her. The mother character shows itself she is a typical chinese. Chinese believe that their old people who dies must be pray and ceremony to sending of their soul must be handled carefully. The believe are followed by chinese traditional families till today to face succeed life with the help of their forefathers.

The son character obey the mother`s order to place the bones of his father`s in the dragon`s mouth and hang the other bones on his horns. The son follows it exactly and one day he have became the Emperor. So, it have given a positive thinking attitudes to the reader to hear what ever advise from the parents. Parents advice are to be followed to succeed in life.

The reason why we are introducing tales, fables, folktales to motivate children to read as they get some information about real life. Another reason to make the teaching and learning process occur in the open classroom.
